Position Description The McGill University Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, invites applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure. The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH)—a member facility of the CIUSSS-West-Central Montreal and a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The Department seeks a highly motivated academic ophthalmologist with advanced subspecialty expertise in glaucoma and complex anterior segment disease. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to academic excellence through clinical care, teaching, research, innovation, and scholarly activity. Job Duties The successful candidate will possess fellowship-level expertise in the comprehensive medical, laser, and surgical management of glaucoma, including: primary and secondary glaucomas; advanced and refractory glaucoma; glaucoma associated with complex ocular comorbidities; perioperative management of glaucoma patients; interpretation and integration of advanced glaucoma diagnostics and imaging. The incumbent will be expected to demonstrate strong independent expertise in both complex glaucoma management and glaucoma surgery, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), filtering surgery, glaucoma drainage devices, and laser-based therapies. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the continued growth and advancement of a high-volume tertiary/quaternary glaucoma service within the Department. A substantial portion of clinical activity is expected to be dedicated to glaucoma-focused practice, including participation in shared clinical and after-hours responsibilities appropriate to the service. In addition, the incumbent will be expected to actively participate in all core missions of an academic ophthalmology department, including: clinical care; undergraduate, postgraduate, and fellowship education; clinical and/or translational research; scholarly dissemination and academic leadership. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide excellent clinical and surgical teaching and supervision to medical students, residents, and fellows, and will be expected to develop or participate in innovative scholarly initiatives and collaborative research activities. Development of an independent externally funded research program is encouraged. The position may include participation in: advanced glaucoma surgery; minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS); combined cataract-glaucoma procedures; surgical simulation and skills training initiatives; teleophthalmology and innovative glaucoma care delivery models; quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. Clinical resources, operating room access, laser allocation, infrastructure support, clinic availability, and scope of practice will be determined through applicable MUHC processes and according to institutional priorities, departmental needs, and available resources. The successful candidate will be expected to be actively involved in, and contribute to, departmental strategic initiatives related to: innovative glaucoma care pathways; virtual care and teleophthalmology; AI-supported diagnostics and imaging; multidisciplinary chronic disease management; improving access to subspecialty ophthalmic care for underserved populations. The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees). McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. Qualifications and Education Requirements Candidates must: Hold or be eligible for licensure in ophthalmology in the province of Quebec; Have completed recognized fellowship training in glaucoma; Demonstrate expertise in complex medical and surgical glaucoma management; Demonstrate proficiency in glaucoma laser procedures and contemporary glaucoma surgical techniques, including MIGS; Demonstrate evidence of scholarly activity and/or clinical research productivity; Demonstrate strong potential for academic leadership, collaboration, innovation, and teaching excellence; Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals. Assets Additional graduate training (e.g., MSc, MPH, PhD, or equivalent) is considered an asset; Demonstrated commitment to resident, fellow, and medical student education; Experience in glaucoma clinical trials and translational research; Expertise in advanced glaucoma imaging and diagnostics; Interest in surgical simulation and competency-based surgical education; Experience with multidisciplinary chronic disease care models; Interest in innovative glaucoma service delivery, teleophthalmology, and AI-assisted diagnostics; Collegial and team-oriented approach to supporting a growing tertiary glaucoma service.
