Backend Engineer

Job description

We are looking for mission-driven senior product engineers to join our Grow squad. We are hiring across two distinct phases of the product lifecycle: scaling a global success and building a new frontier from scratch. The Mission: Our goal is for the Wise Account to become the world’s primary financial hub. We’ve already started by helping customers earn over £50m every month on their balances. Now, we’re looking for engineers to help us lead the next evolution of global wealth. The Work You’ll Do Assets team: We are turning the concept of a "bank balance" on its head. We’ve created a current account experience backed by real assets—government rates and global indices—where customers get daily returns with instant access and zero lock-ins. The Focus: Scaling a product already live in the UK, EU, Singapore, and Australia. The Tech: You’ll be architecting a high-availability "Yield Engine" that manages billions in assets while maintaining bankruptcy-protected custody and seamless, near-instant liquidity. Investments team: This is a true zero-to-one engineering challenge. We are moving beyond index funds to let customers invest in individual stocks and build long-term, tax-beneficial money pots (like ISAs and SIPPs) directly inside Wise. The Focus: Pure greenfield innovation. You will define the technical foundations, brokerage infrastructure, and trading interfaces from the ground up. The Tech: You aren't just shipping features; you are shaping the strategy and code for a brand-new pillar of the Wise ecosystem. Why this is Unique Product Engineering Culture: We don't just hire "coders." We hire owners. You’ll work alongside PMs, Designers, and Analysts to decide what we build, not just how. Transparency: We don't hide fees or "eat" the yield. We charge a fair fee and pass the rest to the customer. You’ll be building a product you can actually be proud of. Extreme Scale & Precision: Whether you are scaling a global engine or building a stock brokerage, you'll be handling high-concurrency systems where data integrity and consistency are absolute. Autonomous Growth: You’ll have the freedom to choose the right tools for the job and the responsibility to fix what you break. What do you need? We are fully aware that it is uncommon for a candidate to have all skills required and we fully support everyone in learning new skills with us. So if you have some of those listed below and are eager to learn more we do want to hear from you! A strong product mindset and passion for user experience, you prioritise work with the customers in mind and make data-driven decisions to fix customer pain-points Great communication skills and the ability to articulate complex, technical concepts to non-technical audiences Ability to break down complex projects into incremental milestones that deliver customer value Ability to coordinate complex projects across different teams Experience in developing web applications and distributed systems in a production environment Experience with common design and architectural patterns coupled with a passion for writing clean code that is performant and well tested Knowledge of Java and Spring boot and experience with a messaging system, like Kafka, is a plus… but don’t worry we don’t expect you to know everything! We are currently only considering local candidates as relocation support is not provided. For local candidates we are able to support transfer of visa sponsorship. Interested?
