Brand Designer, Marketing

Job description

Relay is a digital banking platform that gives self-made business owners the tools and know-how to be great with money—bringing clarity, confidence, and control to every dollar earned, so they can turn hard work into lasting success. We do this by replacing financial guesswork with real visibility, transforming cash flow from a constant source of stress into a clear signal owners can use to run stronger, more resilient businesses. We’re looking for a **Brand Designer** to join Relay’s Marketing Design team and help shape how our brand comes to life across campaigns and customer touchpoints. This is a mid-level role for a conceptually strong, hands-on designer who can independently own projects from brief to delivery. Someone who pairs strong visual craft with storytelling, sound judgment, and reliable project ownership. You’ll work closely with brand designers, copywriters, marketers, and cross-functional partners to create high-quality work across digital, lifecycle, web, social, campaign, event, and sales touchpoints. You’ll contribute to creative direction, present and explain your thinking, manage projects with confidence, and help the team scale through reusable templates, documentation, and growing expertise in a design specialty. Brand Designers at Relay turn strategy, customer insight, and complex financial ideas into work that feels clear, distinctive, and human. In a category that can feel cold or interchangeable, your work helps business owners feel understood and helps Relay earn trust. By bringing strong ideas, owning work from concept to delivery, and creating repeatable resources, you help raise the creative bar while enabling the wider team to move faster. We believe great brand design makes complex ideas feel clear, memorable, and human. If you care about craft, storytelling, and creating work that earns attention and trust, we’d love to hear from you. **What You’ll Be Doing** - Own brand design projects from brief to delivery across channels including paid media, web, lifecycle, social, campaigns, events, and sales enablement - Translate marketing strategy, customer insight, and business context into thoughtful concepts and visual stories, pushing beyond the first or most obvious idea - Apply Relay’s visual identity with consistency and creativity while contributing ideas that evolve how the brand shows up - Independently manage small-to-medium projects by clarifying scope, aligning stakeholders, maintaining timelines and versions, communicating blockers early, and adapting when priorities change - Collaborate closely with partners across Copy, Brand, Growth, Product Marketing, Social, and the wider organization to bring work to market with clarity and quality - Present work and clearly explain the rationale behind your design decisions - Synthesize varied or abstract feedback into stronger design with each round of iteration - Build and maintain templates, libraries, documentation, and reusable resources that improve consistency and make repeatable work more efficient - Use performance signals, stakeholder feedback, and customer context to improve the work and connect design decisions to marketing and business goals - Develop deeper expertise in at least one design specialty, such as motion, social, lifecycle, illustration, iconography, or web, and share that knowledge with teammates - Use emerging tools, including AI, thoughtfully to support—not replace—original concepting and craft while maintaining Relay’s quality and brand standards **Who You Are** - You have 3–5 years of experience in a brand design, visual design, graphic design, or marketing design role, in-house or agency, or equivalent hands-on experience demonstrated through your portfolio - Your portfolio shows strong design fundamentals, thoughtful concepting, and cohesive execution across multi-asset campaigns or multiple channels - You have a strong eye for typography, layout, composition, colour, visual storytelling, and brand consistency - You can clearly explain your individual contribution to projects and the reasoning behind your design decisions - You understand how design supports an audience, a marketing goal, and a broader business objective - You can independently manage small-to-medium projects, balance multiple workstreams, and communicate clearly about scope, timelines, feedback, and risk - You collaborate well across disciplines, contribute actively to brainstorms and critiques, and build trust through follow-through and thoughtful communication - You can absorb complex or abstract feedback, identify what matters, and improve the work rather than simply applying edits literally - You take ownership of your work, seek feedback, and are building deeper expertise in at least one area of brand design - You’re proficient in tools such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and Canva **Bonus Points** - You have experience designing for B2B, SaaS, fintech, financial services, or a fast-moving startup brand - You bring deeper expertise in motion, illustration, web, lifecycle, social, paid media, presentation design, or another relevant specialty - You have created templates, libraries, or documented systems that other designers or marketers rely on - You have experience collaborating with freelancers, agencies, developers, or production partners - You have experience managing project-level budgets or external resources We believe great brand design makes complex ideas feel clear, memorable, and human. If you care about craft, storytelling, and creating work that earns attention and trust, we’d love to hear from you. **The Interview Process** - **Stage 1:** A 45-minute Google Meet call with a member of the Talent team - **Stage 2:** A 45-minute Google Meet deep dive interview with the Brand Designer (including portfolio walk-through) - **Stage 3:** A 60-minute design challenge presentation with a panel of interviewers - **Stage 4:** A 45-minute in-person interview with a member of the Leadership team **Our Compensation Approach** We believe Relayers should feel rewarded for the impact they have on our mission and growth. Compensation follows impact. As impact increases, compensation grows, and we do not limit compensation changes to a once-a-year review cycle. The annual salary range for this role is $108,000 CAD to $132,000 CAD. For candidates who demonstrate full readiness for the defined scope of the role, the typical starting salary is $120,000 CAD. Offers below this point reflect candidates we believe can grow into the full scope of the role with support and development. Offers above this point reflect impact that meaningfully exceeds the role’s defined expectations or an expanded scope from day one. We encourage you to have a conversation with your recruiter and ask questions about compensation throughout the hiring process. Comfort is a signal to push harder, not coast. You'd rather build something better than defend something familiar. - **You crave autonomy:** We trust our team with big challenges and the freedom to solve them. If you’re someone who takes initiative, is comfortable taking risks, and seeks input when needed, you’ll find the freedom here empowering. - **You own your work:** You take pride in your work, follow through on commitments, and feel a deep sense of responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks. - **You build with AI, not just use it:** You're actively embedding AI into how you work, pushing what's possible, and bringing your team along with you. - **You care about impact, not noise:** You care deeply about the substance of your work. You measure success by results, not recognition, and you let your work speak for itself. - **You’re energized by complexity and ambiguity:** You enjoy tackling problems that don’t come with a playbook. You’re comfortable building from scratch, iterating as you go, and collaborating to shape the best path forward. - **You seek out feedback:** You see directness as respect, not criticism. You actively seek input, sit with hard truths, and use feedback as fuel for improvement. - **Small businesses are why we're here:** Relay exists to help them thrive -- and that mission has to resonate with you. **Join Us** We're looking for people who are relentless, curious, and care deeply about the work. You're encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn't perfectly match the job description -- your perspective and drive matter more. We welcome diverse backgrounds and people who think critically, challenge the status quo, and want to help small businesses thrive. If you require accommodations at any stage of the hiring process, please reach out to your Talent Partner. *Disclaimer: For compliance reasons, all offers of employment at Relay are conditional upon a successful background check and employment verification through Certn.* *Important Notice: Relay’s recruitment team only contacts candidates and corresponds from official corporate email addresses ending in @relayfi.com.
