Employment Type: Full time Shift: Description: Trinity Health Michigan (THMI) is looking for its next Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) who will be a data-driven, strategic, clinical and operational executive. The CCO acts as the bridge between clinical care, emerging technologies, and Trinity Health's strategy. Candidate must reside near or be willing to relocate to one of our nine hospital locations within Michigan. POSITION PURPOSE The Chief Clinical Officer reports directly to the President and CEO of Trinity Health Michigan serves as a member of THMI's Executive Team providing strategic thought leadership and direction for the THMI Clinical and Medical Staff Services, Quality, Patient Safety, Research, Graduate Medical Education and Care Management programs across the acute care and ambulatory environment. The CCO serves as the Chief Clinical Leader for Quality working with the THMI regional and local boards to oversee quality, care management, risk, research, regulatory reviews, patient safety and a broad scope of performance improvement support functions for the health system. The Chief Clinical Officer leads the enabling strategies to assure regulatory compliance, and risk management necessary to fulfill and sustain the ministries mission and vision. The Chief Clinical Officer serves as internal consultant to senior medical leadership including each hospital’s President, Chief Medical and Nursing Officer and other medical staff leaders (e.g. Quality and Informatics). Serves with matrix oversite of Chief Medical Officers and Regional Chief Nursing Officer to advance quality, safety and integration of Systemwide Clinical Services. Develops the five-year quality, patient safety, risk management and care management strategic plan and the annual operations plan, then monitors and directs regional, hospital and medical group performance to the plans. Develops consistent strategies for the system quality and focused approach to improving quality and value for the system strategic five-year plan. Works with appropriate hospital and ministry senior leadership team and medical directors to assure consistency and achieve long term quality and utilization objectives. Leads THMI Integrated Clinical Leadership Team, CMO/CNO Council and Co-Chairs the THMI PC3 (i.e. quality subcommittee of the THMI regional board). Facilitates other statewide clinical advisory teams as needed (e.g. readmissions, physician advisors). Attends Trinity Health Michigan Board meetings as staff and provides relevant clinical and patient updates as requested. Leads key service, operational, and staff areas as assigned by the RHM CEO & President including the stewardship of human, financial, and material resources; quality and efficient services; and the alignment of the services of the assigned areas to the strategic plan. Liaisons to Trinity Heath by serving on various councils, collaboratives and task forces as assigned and as a participant in the Trinity Health leadership group. Implements Trinity Health programs and directives. Represents THMI to the State of Michigan business, service, and healthcare community by active participation and leadership within various organizations (e.g. Michigan Hospital Association, Michigan State Medical Society, MDHHS) for quality, patient safety, and utilization matters. Liaison and staff to the Medical Staff and Medical Staff Committees for bylaws standards, clinician credentialing and privileging standards and related quality, patient safety and utilization matters. As the Chief Clinical Officer, ensures coordination across all entities for the entire quality and patient safety efforts of the organization; this includes oversight of risk management, infection control function, case management and Quality Departments. Responsible for fulfillment of all regulatory requirements of The Joint Commission (TCJ), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and State Health and Welfare. Responsible as the Patient Safety Officer for the RHM to improve and enhance all patient safety efforts and initiatives. Provides senior leadership and oversight for the Clinical Resource Management and Acute Social Work Departments and is an available physician liaison for clinical documentation. Provides strategic support to the RHM Leadership to assure development of value driven healthcare across a broad continuum and durable and sustainable physician relationships. Participates in various committees and structures including Quality and Informatics Committee, payer and employer negotiating teams, and various administrative councils as needed. Serves as the accountable executive for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and associated research while partnering with the local graduate medical education leaders. Trinity Health Physician Executive Core Responsibilities: Physician strategy: Engaging physicians as partners in growth, development, and operational and financial excellence across the continuum with a focus on community-based services. Develops lasting partnerships with physicians. Leads efforts to reduce unnecessary clinical variation in partnership with Service line leaders, Medical Group Leaders, and Clinical Framework teams. Actively works to recruit and retain top physicians, including activities to promote wellbeing and reduce burn out. Care Excellence: Assembles high performing teams and works collaboratively to achieve top decile performance in all aspects of care excellence (member experience, safety, quality and operational efficiency). Expert in regulatory and accreditation preparation resulting in positive survey results. Establishes policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations to maintain accreditation. In conjunction with medical group, leads efforts on accurate clinical documentation within patient medical records. Bridges gap between strategic priorities and clinical outcomes. Service line and clinical programs: Actively participates in regional service line development and growth in partnership with dyad service line and medical groups leaders to achieve strategic priorities including clinical program growth. Holds contracted hospital-based groups accountable for performance to drive results. Aligns and integrates care across the continuum. Participates in development of enterprise strategy with shared accountability for financial and clinical outcomes. In collaboration with CNO and Medical Group leadership reshapes care delivery across the continuum to meet operational and financial needs. Connected care: Coordinates clinical activities across the continuum to achieve system goal of connected care. Identifies and collaborates on efforts to close care gaps and improve outcomes of care, including member experience. Innovates care model beyond traditional episodic visits to link patients, care teams and health data in real time, incorporating technologic solutions where appropriate. AI & Tech Integration: Drives the implementation of predictive analytics, AI-assisted diagnostics, and digital health tools to streamline workflows and augment clinician/physician decision-making, improve care excellence, and physician efficiency. In partnership with health informatics, accountable for optimizing usage of approved tools. Workforce Development : Collaborates with Medical Group Leadership and the CNO on physician and APP workforce development and education and training to meet the strategic staffing needs of the future. Collaborates and advises on innovative care models to address workforce challenges. Leads efforts to enhance physician leadership opportunities and growth, including succession planning. Collaborates with CNO and Medical Group leadership on physician and APP workplace health, mental wellbeing, and safety across the continuum. Medical Staff: Leads the medical staff in adopting best practices in credentialing and peer review to assure robust processes to attract and retain the highest quality of privileged providers across the continuum. Facilitates, intervenes and moderates all major Physician-physician, Physician-patient and physician-colleague concerns in collaboration with Chief Nursing Officer and other appropriate medical staff and executive team leaders. Engages and aligns credentialed medical staff. Graduate Medical Education: Serves as system lead for graduate medical education and research activities across the continuum. Strategically aligns GME programs with physician recruitment needs. Partners with Medical Group leadership to recruit and retain trainees within Trinity Health. Health Equity: Shifting the focus toward reducing health disparities and addressing health related social needs. Ethics: Serving as the ethical voice of the organization when balancing clinical risk with innovation, and guiding public-facing medical strategy. Advocacy: Develops a collaborative working relationship with advocacy teams to strengthen the advocacy position of Trinity Health to assure sustainability of the mission. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Relevant clinically related doctoral degree, MD or DO with board certification in specialty. An unrestricted licensure, or ability to be licensed, in the state of Michigan required. Advanced business degree in health care management or MBA preferred. At least 5-10 years of experience in a medical leadership role. Additional advanced degrees preferred in additional to 5-10 years of clinical experience. Track record of continuous improvement in operational quality (e.g. process improvement methodologies), including confirmed success in leveraging clinical systems and technology solutions to support evidence-based decision making. Experience managing healthcare outcomes/costs across multiple locations is required. Previous experience as Chief Medical Officer or other significant Physician Leadership position preferable. Experience with physician contracting, proformas and finance desired. Continued clinical practice preferred. Ability to interpret complex health datasets, predictive models, and clinical efficacy metrics rather than just lagging quality indicators. Demonstrated team, performance analysis, presentation, interpersonal, facilitation, planning, and communication skills. Exceptional emotional intelligence to guide clinical staff through rapid technological adoption and evolving healthcare delivery models. Strong ability to lead by influence, aligning clinical, financial and operational stakeholders. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Must be able to adapt to frequently changing work priorities. Must be able to travel as needed to the various Trinity Health sites.
