Description of Work This position is located at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine, NC a medium custody male facility. This position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders. The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling. Position reports to the Programs Director I. Key Duties Included: - Communicating effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public whether verbally and/or written. - Defending oneself against attack by violent offenders and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive. - Conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area. - Demonstrating and instructing offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies. - Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation. - Performing crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention. - Training, observing, evaluating, and supervising effectively subordinate staff in their duties and responsibilities. - Accounting for supplies and equipment, developing, implementing, and managing Correctional Programs. - Monitoring off site programs, which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe and secure manner at any time of day and in varying weather and road conditions. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Range $39,244 - $68,679 Salary Grade: NC08 Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.
