At the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies in Ulm, we develop precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies and bring them to prototype maturity together with industry. In addition, we are driving forward the transfer to aeronautics, digitalisation, energy, security and transport. We have an interdisciplinary approach: Theoretical basic research and experimental tests meet engineering implementation. What to expect The department Integration of Micro- and Nanosystems (QT-IMN) develops technologies for the implementation and miniaturization of quantum systems. Particular attention is paid to the challenging requirements in aerospace applications. Rydberg atoms are simple yet highly versatile quantum systems. These atoms are excited and manipulated within vapour cells. Using state-of-the-art glass processing techniques in microtechnology and advancements in heterointegration, these cells can be miniaturised and further functionalities such as optical fibres, optical excitation, detection or pressure control can be integrated for specific application development. Join our interdisciplinary team and help us lay the foundations for this innovative approach to building quantum systems. Your tasks You will develop compact vapour cells, focusing in particular on integrated optical components for beam guidance as well as coupling and decoupling. You will plan and develop the further integration of optically active materials into vapour cells. You will design processes for filling the vapour cells with alkali metals and their encapsulation. You will plan and implement process steps and sequences for the manufacture of the designed components. You will be responsible for the planning, execution and evaluation of characterisation methods for miniaturised vapour cells and their components. You will be responsible for part of the micro-production facilities and processes, including the associated tasks of process development, quality management and supervision. You will document research results and technologies for their long-term development and share these with international scientists. Your profile Completed scientific degree (Master/Diploma) in the natural sciences (e.g. physics, materials science) or engineering (e.g. applied physics, microsystems technology, nanotechnology, mechanical engineering) or other relevant degree programmes Expertise in the field of photonics, integrated photonics or laser technology Expertise in microtechnology, joining technology or back-end processes (bonding, dicing, encapsulation, packaging) Initial experience in the development of test systems Experience in CAD, design and rapid prototyping Experience with data acquisition and data analysis Enjoyment of and experience in practical laboratory work Very good written and spoken English Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 13 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.
