Geographic Information Systems Technician I - Jefferson County (Tax Assessor - Birmingham)

TARGET CLOSE DATE: 09/21/2026 PAY GRADE: Grade 19 TYPE: Full time JOB SUMMARY: Jefferson County is seeking a qualified Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician (I) to work in the Tax Assessor (Birmingham) department. GIS Technician (I) perform technical duties in the development and maintenance of creating, verifying, and editing a GIS database using specialized software for tax mapping and/or legal descriptions. GIS Technician (I) enter records into GIS databases. GIS Technicians will have a moderate amount of customer contact, providing information to and answering questions from the public. Their work is performed under the direction of a supervisor and is reviewed through use of production reports for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to policies and procedures. Although this job is typically performed in an indoor setting, there are times they need to travel to locations in order to verify the accuracy of mapping information. The pay range for this job is presented below: $47,736 - $74,068 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position: Experience with basic map reading and interpretation (e.g. Google Earth, paper maps, utilizing legend, scaling, direction) Experience with basic computer skills (e.g., copy and paste, data entry) Completion of GIS coursework (e.g., Drafting and/or Design, Cartography, CAD, Geography, GIS) TARGETED QUALIFICATIONS: The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County. These qualifications may be considered when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes. Associate's degree or higher in GIS, Geography, or Geospatial Mapping and/or certification from an accredited source (e.g. ArcGIS, GISCI, ASPRS, Esri Technical). Work experience entering, updating, or maintaining information in a computer database or mapping system (CAMA, Office Products, SQL). Work experience researching property, location, or mapping information using maps, records, deeds, or similar source documents. TYPICAL JOB DUTIES: Creates GIS maps by designing and replicating graphic representations of GIS data provided by hard-copy maps, deed descriptions, blueprints and various other sources using GIS editing software or hand-drawing to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the content entered into GIS database. Maintains GIS database content by editing content, updating existing or incoming data, researching information and verifying GIS database submissions prior to input using GIS editing software or hand-drawing in order to ensure the accuracy of the content entered. Conducts research related to GIS information by reading deeds, reviewing information for proof of ownership, contacting various individuals, departments or agencies, and conducting site visits in order to determine the accuracy and validity of the request before the information/data is entered into the GIS database. Assists various stakeholders (e.g., employees, governmental agencies, the general public) by drafting correspondence related to GIS activities, handling the sale of maps and responding to inquiries in order to address requests for mapping services and information. Creates reports related to GIS activities by verifying and/or editing GIS data and transposing the information into the appropriate documentation to meet the needs of the department or municipality making the request. Maintains the County's voter database by designating voting districts and ensuring voters are assigned to their correct district to assist with the election process. Performs general maintenance on GIS hardware and software by troubleshooting and repairing equipment and making software/hardware updates in accordance with manufacturer specifications to ensure proper functioning. Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. Job may require working with angry/irate customers or citizens. Job requires continuous education to maintain certification/licensure.
