Middle Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails)

Job description

**This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Middle Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails) based in Netherlands.** As a Middle Software Engineer, you will contribute to the development and maintenance of a mission-critical content platform powering an innovative e-commerce and advertising technology ecosystem. You will take ownership of core backend systems, delivering roadmap features from conception through production while ensuring reliability, scalability, and code quality. Working within an engineering-driven, international team, you will help maintain essential services for content processing, merchant administration, and workflow automation. You will also embrace an AI-first development approach, using coding agents to accelerate delivery, improve software quality, and make existing systems easier for AI tools to maintain. Alongside feature development, you will support production operations, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to continuous improvements in engineering practices. This fully remote opportunity is ideal for a developer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, taking ownership, and exploring the future of AI-assisted software engineering. ### Accountabilities - Maintain, enhance, and develop FAdmin, a core flyer processing system, alongside the broader Content Platform ecosystem, including workflow execution, vendor management, merchant administration, FTP synchronization, and store administration tools. - Deliver roadmap features end to end, from technical planning and implementation through testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance. - Apply an AI-first development approach using Claude Code or similar AI coding agents to accelerate implementation, improve productivity, and support high-quality software delivery. - Use agentic coding workflows to plan tasks, generate and review code, automate development activities, and validate AI-generated solutions against established engineering standards. - Refactor and improve existing codebases and architecture to make systems more maintainable, reliable, and accessible to AI coding agents. - Participate in the Content Layer Service Desk and internal request boards, investigating issues, resolving service requests, and supporting operational continuity. - Write and maintain automated tests to ensure application reliability, prevent regressions, and validate new functionality. - Participate in peer code reviews, share technical knowledge, and promote clean, maintainable, and well-tested code. - Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines to support reliable deployments, shorter feedback cycles, and continuous delivery. - Collaborate with engineers and relevant stakeholders to understand requirements, troubleshoot technical challenges, and deliver solutions aligned with business needs. - Contribute to continuous improvements in development workflows, production support, and AI-assisted engineering practices. ### Requirements: - Between two and five years of professional experience in backend or full-stack software development. - Proven hands-on experience building, maintaining, and deploying production applications using Ruby on Rails. - Two to five years of solid experience working with relational databases, SQL, and query design. - Daily practical experience with AI coding agents such as Claude Code or comparable tools, including task planning, code generation, reviewing AI-generated output, and validating implementation quality. - Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, code maintainability, debugging, and production application development. - Experience writing automated tests, participating in code reviews, and working with CI/CD pipelines. - A proven track record of delivering reliable, high-quality features to production and taking responsibility for their ongoing performance. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues and develop effective technical solutions. - Excellent written and spoken English skills, enabling clear communication and effective collaboration within an international, distributed team. - A proactive, independent working style, with a strong sense of ownership and a willingness to learn and experiment with emerging development tools. **Nice to have:** - Deeper knowledge of AI coding agent capabilities, including skills, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, subagents, and context engineering. - Experience with Kafka or other message brokers and event-driven architectures. - Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon EKS, and AWS infrastructure. - Experience with Datadog, production monitoring, incident investigation, or on-call rotations. - Practical experience with JavaScript and TypeScript. - Exposure to LLM-powered product features, content processing systems, or product catalog data pipelines. - Interest in improving AI-assisted development workflows and making software architectures more suitable for agent-based engineering. ### Benefits: - **Competitive compensation:** Attractive monthly remuneration based on experience and skills. - **Fully remote work:** Flexibility to work remotely within the supported European working arrangement. - **Flexible schedule:** Working hours designed to support autonomy and work-life balance. - **Paid vacation:** 18 paid working days of annual leave. - **Paid sick leave:** Sick leave coverage, including five days per year that do not require documentation. - **Health and well-being support:** Medical insurance or sports programs to support your physical health and wellness. - **Professional development:** Opportunities to obtain certifications, attend conferences, and continuously expand your technical expertise. - **Learning opportunities:** Access to English lessons and support for ongoing professional growth. - **Modern equipment:** Work with Mac computers and tools that support efficient software development. - **Team activities:** Opportunities to participate in sports activities, charity initiatives, and team engagement events. - **Administrative support:** Full assistance with Private Entrepreneur (FOP) reporting services, where applicable. - **Engineering-focused environment:** Collaborate with experienced technical professionals in a team that values engineering excellence, asynchronous communication, and continuous improvement.
