This job designs and fits supportive products to provide care to patients who have disabling conditions of the limbs and spine or need assistance with activities of daily living to maintain function to remain active. Assesses patients, formulates a treatment plan, implements the treatment plan, follows up and manages the practice. Works closely with the medical staff in the treatment and/or rehabilitation of the injured, athlete or physically challenged. Additionally, Assumes responsibility for fitting patients with orthotic braces as well as dispensing TENS units to patients and instructing them on use and care. Education Required - High School diploma or equivalent Preferred - Additional degrees, business training experience and/or certifications may be combined to meet minimum qualifications. Work Experience Required - 2 years sales experience with relevant orthopedic products or two years of related health experience, including experience fitting and delivering non-custom orthotic devices such as cervical orthoses not requiring more than minor modification; pressure gradient host; trusses; non-complex prefabricated spinal orthotics and prefabricated orthoses of upper and lower extremities. Certification Preferred - Certification as a Certified Fitter of Orthotics Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard. Strong interpersonal skills. Thorough understanding of medical terminology. Active listening, reading and comprehension skills for analyzing reports, charts and correspondence. Job Duties Applies orthotic bracing. Dispenses and provides instruction for TENS units. Manages patients. Maintains consignment closets. Maintains professional certification and education requirements and keeps abreast of applicable coding and billing requirements. Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style. Mechanical lifting devices (carts, dollies, etc.) or team lifts should be utilized. Must be able to stoop, bend, reach and grab with arms and hands, manual dexterity. Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue, but exposure or potential for exposure may occur. The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain communicable diseases. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases. Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste.
