Patient Care Assistant-Family Care Unit (Full Time 7p-7a - three 12 hour shifts a week requirement)

Unit Description The Family Care Unit is an exciting and unique nursing unit that provides care for women and newborns. Located in the UMC East Tower, the Family Care Unit consists of 44 large, private suites and a Newborn Procedure Area. The Family Care Unit (FCU) staff provide mother-baby care for new moms and babies (referred to as a couplet), as well as nursing care for other types of female patients. Additional patient populations served on the FCU consist of stable antepartum (pregnant), gynecology, Gyn-oncology and medical-surgical patients. Nurses gain knowledge and expertise in postpartum care, neonatal resuscitation, newborn assessment and care, and breastfeeding management/support. Additionally, the Family Care Unit nurses become knowledgeable and skilled in basic electronic fetal monitoring and nursing management of a variety of medical-surgical conditions. The Family Care Unit is an ideal place for nurses looking to optimize their clinical experience, time management, and critical thinking skills in a team-oriented environment. PCAs are responsible for providing basic patient care under the supervision of a nurse. The duties generally include observing patients, recording vital signs, performing EKGs, drawing labs, non-sterile dressing changes, removing IVs, removing foley catheters, and reporting changes in patient conditions. Has a working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies. REPORTS TO: JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: I. Clinical Standards • Quality Patient Care- Provide quality patient care adhering to safety practices and proper clinical documentation. Quickly adjusts to quality initiatives and change. Contributes to the success of the nursing unit with specific strategic plans. • Reporting and Documentation • Hospital Wide Quality Metrics o Inpatient Satisfaction “Likelihood to Recommend" (Non-nursing department use house wide score; Nursing units use department specific score) o NRC: Ambulatory Surgery - Departments use specific results (OPS, GI, Cath, and IR) o NRC: Individual Department results • Quality Measurement: Did staff wash their hands? • Stewardship- Cost Center actual expenses in comparison to flex budget II. Patient Safety and Quality Outcomes (NDNQI quality data – Units that do not monitor specific indicators will use the hospital wide scoring for the year) - Performance/Evaluation Criteria: Below 25th percentile, Below the mean, Below the 50th percentile, above the 75th percentile, or Above the 90th percentile • Falls with Injury • Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcer • Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) • Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI) EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: REQUIRED LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS: Patient Care Tech Certification SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The Patient Care Tech Technical Procedure Privileging Form details procedures the employee is expected to perform and must be completed by the end of the 3-month probationary period. Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care. INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS: This position requires close interaction with other ancillary departments to facilitate a quality multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES: Work is of medium demand. Standing, walking most of the time on duty. Lifting and pushing patients, carts, and wheelchairs. Good tactile sensation is necessary for checking patients. Talking and hearing to converse with patients and staff members. Near visual acuity for accurate reading of gauges and thermometers and for recording on patients' charts. ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside. Hours of duty may be irregular covering various shifts. Exposure of blood-borne pathogens is of high risk.
