Job Description To plan, implement and evaluate the provision of high-quality medical care, with appropriate resource management, to children and adolescents in the respective clinical area. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invites interested applicants for a faculty level position in pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center provides a rich and collaborative environment for basic, clinical, and translational research and boasts a diverse faculty. The Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program is one of the largest pediatric BMT programs in the country, performing more than 80 lifesaving BMTs in 2024. The BMT program is an integral component of the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center, and currently includes 12 faculty members, with a broad range of basic, clinical and translational research. Qualified candidates should be Board Certified/Eligible Hematologist/Oncologists, and preference will be given to applicants who wish to continue a career focused on clinical care in transplantation and cellular therapy. This is a clinical position, and research commitment is flexible depending on the candidate’s qualifications. Rank of assistant or associate professor will depend on experience and accomplishments. About the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center The successful candidate will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the country. In 2024, the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center was ranked No. 12 in the nation for Pediatric Cancer by US News and World Report Each year our team cares for more than 170 newly diagnosed leukemia and lymphoma patients using a variety of treatment protocols, including blood and marrow transplant (BMT), hematopoietic stem cell transplant, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T therapy, and Phase I and II clinical trials for patients whose cancer has relapsed or is not responding to treatment The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has over 130 faculty and nearly 50 Advance Practice Providers (APPs), conducting basic, translational, cooperative group and investigator-initiated clinical research related to pediatric oncology and hematology disorders, with expertise in leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcomas, rare tumors, renal tumors, CAR T-cell therapies, cancer survivorship, health services research, hemoglobinopathies and hemophilia. More than 9,000 children with cancer and blood disorders are treated annually at the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center The Aflac pediatric oncology program sees ~500 new cancer diagnoses each year. Aflac is the pediatric component of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. The Aflac pediatric hematology program is one of the largest in the country (including >2,000 active patients with sickle cell disease, and >1,000 with bleeding or clotting disorders) The Aflac blood and marrow transplantation program performs ~80 transplants each year, and is one of the leaders in curative therapies for hemoglobinopathies. In 2024, Aflac faculty generated $31M in extramural funding, including more than $17M from the NIH The Aflac fellowship program accepts 6 fellows each year for intensive clinical and research training in pediatric hematology/oncology. We are one of the few pediatric programs with an NIH-funded T32 training grant in non-malignant hematology. The Aflac Developmental Therapeutics Program includes Leukemia and Lymphoma faculty from the High-Risk Leukemia team and offers a wide portfolio of clinical trials from cooperative groups, industry partners, and investigator-initiated studies, and has a larger referral base in the southeastern United States. Aflac is a member of the COG Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN), NANT, TACL, and PBTC. The MIBG and Relapsed Neuroblastoma Program is the largest in the southeast and has treated ~100 patients with therapeutic MIBG since its inception in 2013. This position offers a wealth of opportunities for research collaborations within the Department of Pediatrics, Winship Cancer Institute, Grady Hospital as well as with Emory basic science departments, the Rollins School of Public Health, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse School of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Successful candidates will have: MD, MD/PhD, or DO degrees Must be Board Certified in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Must be currently licensed as a physician and eligible for licensure as a physician in the State of Georgia A history of clinical excellence/achievement Salary and rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor at Emory University School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments. The primary focus of this position will be an emphasis on clinical service including inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, and administrative duties. Experience No minimum Experience Required. Preferred Qualifications Experience in respective clinical area. Education Graduate of an accredited, four-year medical school. Graduate of an accredited, post-graduate residency program in Pediatrics. Completion of an accredited fellowship program in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Certification Summary Board Certified/ Board Eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Georgia. BLS or PALS certification required. Current DEA registration. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and families and as a team member. Meets eligibility requirements for credentialing as part of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Professional Staff. Job Responsibilities Provides patient care within the respective clinical area which complies with the Professional Staff Bylaws, rules and regulations and Children’s policies and procedures. Participates in and incorporates Quality Improvement and research findings into practice. Provides and/or serves as a resource for patient/family and staff education. Educate and assist trainees with medical decision making. Provides an authenticated report of all physician services rendered and maintains accurate and complete records in an acceptable manner. Completes necessary documentation and ensures timely communication to facilitate patient care and appropriate reimbursement. Actively responds to patient and clinical staff questions and requests. Participates in meetings/activities as required to support operations of the clinical area. Participates in activities that enhance professional development, complete, and maintain certification in BLS, PALS, or NALS and maintains any additional specialty training/certifications as required by the area assigned.
