Robotics Algorithm Engineer (Packing Algorithm & Optimization)

Job description

Mujin is a global leader in industrial automation, redefining supply chain efficiency through **MujinOS**—our intelligent operating system for robotics. At our core is [Machine Intelligence (MujinMI)](https://gembawalk.mujin.co.jp/blog/mujinmi-technology), a unique approach that leverages real-time digital twins and advanced perception, planning, and control algorithms to achieve fully autonomous operations. Our flagship product, **MujinController**, empowers users with a highly configurable, no-code interface. By integrating cutting-edge motion planning and computer vision, it enables seamless automation for complex applications such as palletizing, picking, and truck unloading. Headquartered in Japan with a growing presence in the US, China, and Europe, we invite you to join a dynamic environment where you can shape the future of automation. Our team develops MujinOS's core algorithmic layer, combining control, motion planning, and packing algorithms that power applications such as palletizing, piece-picking, and depalletizing. We work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where ideas are openly discussed, reviewed, and refined. Continuous learning and technical curiosity are strongly encouraged. As part of the Robotics System Team, you will design and develop algorithms for real-time industrial robotic systems. **Team Structure & Focus Areas** Our team consists of three algorithmic tracks. While you will primarily focus on one area, close collaboration across teams is common. **Control Algorithms** Real-time trajectory control, robot dynamics, multibody modeling, and precision execution. **Motion Planning** Collision checking, sampling-based planning, optimization-based planning, and high-speed bin-picking motions. **Packing Algorithms** Geometric reasoning, packing optimization, item placement strategies, and combinatorial search. To support the growth of our **Packing Algorithms** team, we are looking for a **Robotics Algorithm Engineer (Optimization & Packing)**. In this role, you will develop algorithms for geometric reasoning, item placement, and space optimization used in real-world robotic applications across logistics and warehouse automation. ### Responsibilities - Design and implement robust algorithms for 3D bin packing, container/trailer loading, and space optimization — ensuring maximal utilization and compliance with physical and operational constraints. - Work with spatial reasoning, 3D geometry, collision detection, and geometric data structures (e.g., for crates, pallets, container interiors). - Integrate packing logic with MujinOS’s real-time motion planning and digital-twin workflows to feed downstream robotic behavior. - Collaborate with robotics, perception, and systems teams to ensure that packing algorithms align with robot kinematics, motion planning, and real-world operational constraints (weight, stacking rules, fragile items, rotation limits, etc.). - Profile, test, and optimize algorithms for high performance and scalability — able to run in real time or near-real time in high-throughput logistics environments. - Work closely with operations, product management, and customers to translate ambiguous or variable real-world constraints into robust, production-ready technical solutions. ### Required Qualifications - 5+ years of professional software engineering experience. - Strong proficiency in Python and C++. - Deep understanding of algorithms, computational geometry, spatial data structures, bin/packing / space-optimization problems, or operations research. - Familiarity with optimization frameworks or ability to design custom heuristics/solvers (heuristics, meta-heuristics, constraint or combinatorial optimization). - Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to convert ambiguous real-world constraints (logistics/trucking/warehouse rules) into concrete, maintainable software. - Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset; comfortable working in cross-functional teams combining software, robotics, operations, and product stakeholders. - Exposure mixed-SKU palletizing, container loading/unloading, or dynamic storage/packing systems. - Professional working proficiency in English (spoken and written). ### Nice to Have - Experience in logistics, warehouse automation, robotics, or supply chainsystems. - Familiarity with robotic control pipelines, motion-planning frameworks, or integration of algorithms into autonomous systems. - Experience with 3D visualization tools or frameworks (for simulation or debugging). ### Why Mujin? - Your work doesn’t stay in simulation—your algorithms become production-grade, real-world applications such as palletizing, picking, and depalletizing that run on factory floors globally. - You will work on real industrial robotics problems, and your algorithms will be deployed rapidly to solve previously impossible automation challenges. - Our team is made up of experienced robotics specialists from top global programs (e.g., NTU, CMU, Stanford). You’ll work alongside supportive teammates and mentors who share knowledge openly and help each other grow. - We develop the core of the Mujin platform in-house, unifying planning, perception, simulation, and control so we can shape the entire system with complete autonomy. ### Hiring Process - **Coding Assessment:** Initial technical evaluation. - **HR Interview:** Discussion with Human Resources. - **Hiring Manager Interview:** One or two rounds with the hiring manager. - **Take-Home Assignment & Feedback Interview (If Applicable):** A task to complete on your own, followed by a feedback session.
