Senior Data & AI Engineer - Tech Lead

Job description

The Role We are looking for a Senior AI/ML Engineer to provide technical leadership across AI and data initiatives. This is a hands-on individual contributor role for someone who can take ambiguous AI/ML problems, understand the technical challenges, shape practical solutions and break them down into executable engineering work. You'll work closely with engineers, data scientists, product, domain experts, Delivery and Architecture to turn ideas into technically sound, production-ready solutions. You'll help teams make difficult technical decisions, identify risks and unknowns early, and provide the technical direction needed to move complex initiatives forward . Success in this role means helping teams make better technical decisions, reducing uncertainty early and improving the quality and predictability of engineering execution. This is a hybrid permanent role, with 3 days on-site and 2 days working from home. What You'll Work On You'll help build AI and data products used in energy environments, including: Predictive maintenance for critical infrastructure Anomaly detection on industrial sensor data Asset monitoring and operational intelligence Energy forecasting and time-series modelling Production ML systems operating on large-scale multimodal datasets These are difficult real-world problems involving noisy and incomplete sensor data, sparse labels, large-scale time-series datasets and evolving operational requirements. What You'll Do Shape technical solutions — Turn ambiguous AI/ML problems into clear, practical technical approaches. Break down complex initiatives — Translate high-level problems into technical components, dependencies and executable engineering work. Guide AI/ML decisions — Make and communicate trade-offs across data, models and systems, balancing quality, reliability, complexity, cost and performance. Provide technical leadership — Work with engineers, data scientists, product and domain experts to resolve complex technical challenges and maintain a clear engineering direction. Improve engineering quality — Establish good practices and patterns that make AI/ML systems reliable, maintainable and scalable. What We're Looking For We're looking for someone who combines strong AI/ML engineering capability with sound technical judgement and a pragmatic approach to solving complex problems. What you will need: A relevant degree Significant experience building real-world AI, ML or data products. Strong understanding of AI/ML systems, from data and modelling through to production. Experience taking initiatives from an uncertain or early-stage idea through to a working solution. Strong software engineering fundamentals, particularly in Python. Experience working with data-intensive or time-series systems. The ability to reason about system design, dependencies, scalability, reliability and operational constraints. Strong judgement when evaluating technical options and trade-offs. The ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience working effectively with engineers, data scientists, product and domain experts. A collaborative approach, with the confidence to challenge assumptions constructively. You don't need to be the deepest specialist in every AI/ML technique. We're looking for someone who can connect the different pieces, make good technical decisions and help teams solve difficult problems. Technology Our current technology environment includes: Python Apache Spark Databricks MLflow Large-scale industrial and time-series datasets We don't expect you to have used every technology in the stack. Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn and apply the right tools matter more than matching every item. Why This Role Work on real-world industrial and energy datasets. Solve technically challenging AI/ML problems with visible business impact. Have meaningful technical influenc e. Help turn ambiguous problems into practical, production-ready solutions. Grow into broader technical ownership across Camlin's AI and data initiatives.
