The company empowers customers to uncover, take action, and rapidly recover from cyberattacks – keeping data safe and businesses resilient. The company’s unique AI-powered platform combines best-in-class data protection, exceptional data security, advanced data intelligence, and lightning-fast recovery across any workload or cloud at the lowest TCO. For over 25 years, more than 100,000 organizations and a vast partner ecosystem have relied on Commvault to reduce risks, improve governance, and do more with data. ## About the Team: The Clumio Backend team designs, builds, and operates core backend systems that support Clumio's cloud-native data protection platform. For many customers, data protection is not a "nice-to-have" capability, but a foundational requirement driven by compliance, audit, and security mandates. In these environments, recovery performance, cost efficiency, strong governance, and reliable operation at scale are critical differentiators. The team builds and operates key backend components of the platform's control and management plane, playing an integral role in how customers securely interact with, configure, and manage their data protection environments. These systems are designed to scale dynamically based on workload characteristics such as the number of protected assets, event volume, and overall data scale, and they integrate closely with other platform and data plane components. Built on a cloud-native architecture, the Backend team develops shared services and well-defined interfaces that abstract complexity from underlying systems and enable consistent, reliable, and scalable interactions across the platform. This work supports the continued evolution of the platform, enabling new capabilities, data sources, and workflows to be added efficiently and safely. The team also contributes to backend services that support data protection workflows, with a strong focus on correctness, resiliency, and operational robustness. These systems are engineered to handle failures and disruptions gracefully through retries, reprocessing, and validation mechanisms, ensuring reliable operation under real-world conditions and at large data scales. Beyond core data protection workflows, the Backend team helps enable essential SaaS capabilities across the platform, including lifecycle management, observability, usage and cost insights, and intelligent analytics that support effective operation and informed customer decision-making. The team works on a mature, production-proven platform and collaborates closely across engineering and product disciplines as Clumio expands its capabilities across multiple cloud environments. Working closely with product, frontend, infrastructure, quality engineering, and customer-facing teams, the Backend team focuses on building highly reliable, scalable, and operable distributed systems that form a critical part of Clumio's enterprise-grade cloud data protection platform. ## Role Overview: As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Clumio team, you are a key contributor to the backend systems that power the control and management plane of the cloud-native data protection platform. Reporting to an Engineering Director, this role emphasizes strong hands-on engineering, ownership of backend components, and collaboration across functions to deliver reliable production systems. You design, build, and operate backend services that support core platform capabilities such as control planes, user-access management, and backup workflows. You take ownership of features or components, driving them from implementation through production operation, and continuously improve them based on real-world usage, operational signals, and customer feedback. You contribute to service design and API development, making sound technical trade-offs that balance correctness, scalability, cost, and maintainability under evolving requirements. You spend most of your time writing and reviewing production-quality code, diagnosing and resolving complex backend issues, and participating in on-call and operational responsibilities. You work closely with Product, quality assurance, customer-facing, and other teams to clarify requirements, ensure production readiness, and support smooth feature delivery. Through code quality, design contributions, and mentorship of junior engineers, you help reinforce best practices and strengthen the reliability and scalability of the backend platform. ## Basic Qualifications: - **4+** years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of features or components from implementation through production operation. - Experience building and operating non-trivial production systems, including diagnosing issues and improving implementations based on real-world behavior. - Ability to translate loosely defined requirements into correct, maintainable technical solutions and make sound trade-offs under uncertainty. - Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as **Go** (Preferred), Python, Java, or Rust. - Highly collaborative and self-driven, with a strong sense of shared ownership, and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional and geographically distributed teams, fostering open communication and alignment across time zones. ## Preferred Qualifications - Experience owning a component or subsystem within a larger backend or cloud-native platform. - Familiarity with cloud platforms such as **AWS**, GCP, or Azure, and common cloud-native design patterns. - Experience with data-intensive systems, object storage, or large-scale backend services. - Exposure to backup, disaster recovery, or data protection systems in production environments. ## You’ll Love Working Here Because ... - Collaborate with amazing, driven, and supportive team members. - Enjoy continuous professional growth through product training, development programs, and clear career pathways. - Work on high-impact, large-scale cloud data protection systems used by global enterprises. - Thrive in an inclusive, open culture with opportunities to connect through our community groups. - Take advantage of generous global benefits tailored to support your well-being. - Receive competitive compensation that reflects your impact. - Share in our success through our Employee Stock Purchase Plan. #LI-MR1 #LI-Hybrid Commvault is an equal opportunity workplace and is an affirmative action employer.
