Senior Full Stack Engineer (Contractor Role)

Job description

**About Auror** At Auror, we’re empowering the retail industry to tackle theft and Organised Retail Crime, a $150 Billion problem globally. It’s high volume crime that’s increasingly organised in nature and is putting people, retailers, and communities at risk every day. Founded in New Zealand 13 years ago, we’re working with some of the best and largest retailers in the world across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Auror is connecting people and intelligence to reduce crime. We’re using technology for good. In partnership with our leading retail partners, we need people with the passion, determination, and innovation required to overcome one of the world's largest problems. If you’re looking to make a difference with and for the people dedicated to stopping crime, for good, then we want you on our team. We're also embracing the potential of AI to supercharge our impact - whether that's enhancing the way we detect trends, support our customers, or improve internal workflows. As a company, we're committed to responsibly incorporating AI into how we work and what we build, and we encourage all Aurors to be curious about how AI can elevate their work, regardless of role or function. **The Contract Role** We're hiring 2 x senior contract full stack engineers to work within one of our new domain services in the platform, on an initial contract of approximately six months. This is greenfield work inside an established product. A core capability is being carved out into its own service, with its own data model, its own API, and its own front end. The work runs the full depth of that slice: building out the service and its contracts in C#/.NET, exposing it cleanly to internal and public API clients, and building the React and TypeScript experience on top of it. This is deliberately not a backend-only or frontend-only role. You'll be expected to move across the whole stack to deliver complete outcomes, and to be equally comfortable reasoning about service boundaries and asynchronous workflows as you are building a complex, stateful UI. If you're strong at one end and passable at the other, this won't be the right fit. You'll be joining an existing team, working closely with Product, Design and engineers on adjacent systems. The work is well-defined in outcome and open in approach, so we're looking for someone who can operate with a high degree of autonomy and create momentum without close direction. Success looks like a capability the permanent team can confidently own and extend long after the contract ends. **Location** - We are open to fully remote candidates within New Zealand. **About Auror Engineering** Collaboration is at the heart of the Engineering team at Auror. We believe that we can only build the very best software by working with each other and seeking different perspectives to solve problems. We’re a team that: - Ship code to production constantly: Our product team ships code to production on average at least 10-15 times a day prioritising small releases and short feedback cycles and we do this with a minimal defect rate. - Work on cloud native architecture: We focus on delivering business value to customers, without the burden of maintaining complex infrastructure - Work on innovative and up to date tech stacks: We are constantly evolving our technology stack inline with the needs of our business, leveraging React and Typescript for front-end and C# / Dotnet for back end. We host our services in Azure and utilise a wide range of cloud-native services with an evolving service-oriented architecture. - Contribute to our product: We work with Product Management and Product Design from the very beginning to make sure we’re delivering value to our customers and making a meaningful impact. - Supports a coaching culture: Together, we support one another to level up - Continuously improve: We are relentless about getting better and improving our processes, tooling and tech stack. **What you’ll do:** - Design and build a new service in C#/.NET, including its data model, API contracts, and integration points with existing systems - Build a sophisticated, reliable front-end experience in React and TypeScript, working within our established design system and component library, covering dynamic forms, conditional logic, validation, autosave, and clear error handling - Make the new capability available to a range of clients, including our public API - Develop automated tests across the stack, covering front-end behaviour, API validation, permissions, persistence, and integration with existing systems - Build in observability and sensible failure recovery from the start - Break work into safe, valuable increments, and surface risks, dependencies, and trade-offs early - Work with Product and Design to turn evolving requirements into clear, incremental releases - Leave the codebase, patterns, and documentation in a state the permanent team can pick up without you **About you** - Genuine full stack capability. Strong C#/.NET is strongly preferred, and you can reason confidently about APIs, service boundaries, asynchronous workflows, and data flows - Deep React and TypeScript experience, building sophisticated production applications within an established design system and component library rather than introducing your own patterns - Delivery focus. You can take an ambiguous problem, clarify it, break it into increments, and safely ship working software within a fixed timeframe - Comfortable with semi-formed requirements. You can work from a direction rather than a specification. You go and talk to the people who hold the context, form your own view, and bring it back to get alignment before building. You don't wait to be handed the detail bullet by bullet, and you don't disappear and build the wrong thing either - Testing and reliability mindset. You build with automated testing, observability, permissions, and data integrity in mind - Judgement in how you use AI. We use AI-assisted engineering tools here and we expect you to. We also expect you to own everything you ship: no code you can't explain, no tests that pass without testing anything, no documentation that reads like it was generated and never read - Contract readiness. You onboard quickly, work independently, and communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly - We are looking for people who demonstrate a strong alignment to our Guiding Principles (you can find these on our [Careers page](https://www.auror.co/company-careers)). Auror is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible application process to all candidates and we are actively working to improve diversity within the tech industry. We celebrate diversity and inclusiveness at Auror, regardless of (but not limited to) race, gender, sexual orientation, family status, religion, ethnicity, national origin, physical disability, veteran status, or age. If you need adjustments to any part of our recruitment process because of accessibility reasons, please do not hesitate to let us know during the application process. We will work with you to identify adjustments that will allow you to perform at your best. **Contract rates** - NZD $100-130 per hour **What are the next steps?** If this looks like a fit and you're available, hit Apply. We're moving quickly on this one. **A note for recruitment agencies** We're running this search directly, alongside our existing preferred suppliers. We're not accepting unsolicited candidate submissions, and no fee is payable for CVs sent to Auror employees without a written agreement in place beforehand.
