Senior Software Engineer (Home Energy)

Job description

# About Enode The grid was built for predictable, centralised power. Today it's absorbing intermittent supply from grid scale solar and wind, alongside dynamic demand from EVs, heat pumps, and home batteries. The missing piece is software that can connect and orchestrate these devices at scale. We’re the layer between the home and the grid. Our [platform](https://enode.com/platform/overview) connects every asset, coordinates every home and shapes thousands as one. [Asset connectivity](https://enode.com/platform/assets) gives energy retailers one API for 1,000+ device models across 100+ brands. [Home energy coordination](https://enode.com/platform/homes) turns that connection into smarter behavior at home, like charging an EV in the cheapest hours or using more of your own solar. [Residential flexibility](https://enode.com/platform/flexibility) brings connected homes together into a dispatchable resource the grid can count on. Europe’s largest energy companies build on [Enode](https://enode.com/company): retailers, utilities and the teams that trade for them. The platform spans 1.7M+ connected households and 5,000+ MW of controllable load. We’re backed by Y Combinator, Lowercarbon Capital and Creandum. The decisions made now will shape how the next grid gets built. We’re looking for people who take ownership, think clearly under complexity and care deeply about the craft of building software that matters. # AI is fundamental to how we work AI is how a team our size keeps rewiring the way we work, fast enough to match what our mission demands. We look for people who reach for AI as a reflex and who can drop a habit that used to work. People who care about unblocking others, not just about what they ship themselves. If that's not quite how you work yet but it's the direction you're heading, we'd still like to hear from you. We assess this in our interview process, alongside everything else we look at. ## What we're looking for: We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to help build the software layer that makes home energy devices work as one system. The Home Energy team owns Enode's integrations and APIs for batteries, solar inverters, HVAC, and smart meters, along with the home energy management (HEM) system and statistics that customers build on. You'll build integrations with leading OEMs and help mature our API surface into the unified control layer for the home, at a moment when customer demand for battery and home energy optimization is accelerating. You'll join the Home Energy team, reporting to the team's Engineering Manager. You'll collaborate closely with your PM, fellow backend engineers, and our partnership and commercial teams, from assessing OEM API feasibility to shaping how customers control energy assets through our platform. In this role, you will: - Build and maintain integrations with OEM cloud platforms across batteries, solar, smart meters, and HVAC. - Design and evolve our home energy APIs, unifying telemetry and controls across HEM system, batteries, and curtailment into a product surface customers can build optimizations on. - Build with AI as a normal part of how you work, and turn what you learn into tools, skills and processes the rest of the team picks up, so the leverage is shared rather than personal. - Improve observability and vendor performance across our integrations, and take part in the team's triage rotation. - Work with partnership and commercial teams on API feasibility for new OEM integrations. - Build strong relationships with the customers who rely on our platform, working alongside your PM and commercial partners, and let what you learn from them shape what we build. - Debug and ship production features in Node/TypeScript on our AWS-based stack. - Take a product-engineer mindset, balancing speed, quality, and customer impact in your day-to-day decisions. Curious what you'd actually be building? Explore our [API docs](https://developers.enode.com) and the [Enode Tech Blog](https://medium.com/enode-tech-blog) to see what we ship and how we think about it. ## This role will be right for you, if: You're an ambitious backend engineer who likes to own things end to end: from an ambiguous problem, through design and integration work, to something shipped and running in production. You find integration challenges satisfying rather than frustrating, including working with third-party APIs of varying maturity, and you're energized by tough technical problems. You're comfortable navigating ambiguity and bringing clarity and structure that help a team move forward. You collaborate naturally with engineers, PMs, and commercial partners, and you like being close enough to the product to influence where it goes. Above all, you care about building software with real-world impact that supports the shift toward a cleaner, more flexible energy system. You bring: - Experience building and maintaining backend services in production, ideally in API or integration-heavy systems. - AI is a real part of how our engineers work, and we expect a senior engineer to be fluent with it. You use AI day to day, you understand where it helps and where it falls short, and you think about your work in terms of what AI can take on. If you're not fully there yet, you're eager to get there fast. - Strong skills in designing for reliability, scalability, and performance. - Ability to own work from initial scoping to production rollout, including iterating based on customer or usage insights. - Comfort in fast-moving, sometimes ambiguous environments where teams create clarity together. - Clear, thoughtful communication across engineering, product, and customer-facing teams. - A product mindset: you care about solving the right problem and making life easier for customers and teammates. Nice to have: - Experience with TypeScript/Node, AWS services, PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, or similar production tooling. - Familiarity with home energy assets (batteries, solar/inverters, HVAC, smart meters), energy markets, or IoT/device ecosystems. - Prior exposure to API-first products or integration platforms. - On-call or incident response experience. # What we offer: - Opportunity to join and impact an early-stage climate tech startup with global aspirations as we scale. - A mission-driven, fun and caring environment with high drive and ambition. - Competitive compensation, including a very attractive employee option program - you’re part of our journey. - Access to best in class AI tooling, we think the ceiling on what a small team can do has fundamentally shifted, and we want you to feel that. - Real investment in your AI fluency. Dedicated time to build the skill, an internal skills library you can contribute to, and the tooling budget to work properly. - Remote-first in Europe, with the option of attending an office in Oslo or receiving a co-working pass on demand. - Three annual off-sites to connect with the team in exciting & fun places. - Flexible, human-first culture. - Stipend for setting up your home office. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ### A few things to note: - Enode is an equal opportunities employer. Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. We are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may just be the right candidate for this or other roles. - Our values are integral to the way we work and are embedded into all our hiring processes. You can read more about our values [here](https://enode.com/careers).
