Software Developer – Propulsion Control Systems

Job description

Software Developer – Propulsion Control Systems 📍 Hönö, Gothenburg | Berg Propulsion Would you like to develop software that controls and monitors marine propulsion systems? We are looking for a Software Developer within Propulsion Control Systems who wants to work closely with both hardware and advanced control systems for the future of shipping. At Berg Propulsion, you will develop embedded software for our propulsion systems and have the opportunity to follow your work throughout the entire process – from system design and programming to testing and real-world operation onboard vessels. About Berg Propulsion Berg Propulsion develops propulsion and energy solutions for the global marine industry, with a strong focus on innovation, technical excellence, and more efficient and sustainable shipping. At our Hönö site, engineers from different disciplines work closely together to develop complete solutions for the vessels of the future. Software and control systems are becoming increasingly important parts of our propulsion solutions and play a central role in system functionality, performance, and reliability. About the Role As a Software Developer within Control Systems, you will work with improvements of our current platform as well as contribute to the development of our next generation of control systems for Berg Propulsion’s propulsion solutions. Your main focus will be embedded development in C, with software running directly on microcontrollers in a bare-metal environment . The software interacts closely with sensors, I/O, communication interfaces, and other onboard control systems. The role extends well beyond programming. You will work throughout the entire development lifecycle – from requirements, system design, and architecture to implementation, integration, testing, and troubleshooting. As the software directly controls physical equipment, you will work closely with both the hardware and the propulsion system. This gives you the opportunity to follow your software from development and testing in a laboratory environment all the way to a propulsion system operating onboard a vessel. You will be part of our software team and collaborate closely with engineers within areas such as automation, electronics, and electrical integration. The team also includes developers working with Energy Management Systems, Digital Solutions, and other software solutions. In this role, you will: Develop and maintain software for marine propulsion control systems. Design and implement software, primarily in Embedded C . Develop and maintain interfaces with sensors, I/O, and other onboard systems. Work with communication interfaces and industrial and marine communication protocols. Contribute to system architecture and the design of new solutions. Perform software and system testing, verification, and troubleshooting. Contribute to test environments, simulation, and automated testing. Collaborate across engineering disciplines to develop complete propulsion control systems. Contribute technical expertise to the roadmap and architecture of future control systems. The role may involve international travel to shipyards, vessels, customers, and partners in connection with integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, Electronics, Automation , or another relevant technical field. We are open to different technical backgrounds – what matters most is your expertise and understanding of embedded development and hardware-near systems. Technical Knowledge We are looking for someone with: Strong programming skills in Embedded C , as well as knowledge of C++ and Python. Experience working with microcontrollers and low-level development . An understanding of embedded software architecture. An understanding of debugging and testing embedded software. Knowledge of version control and modern software development practices. The ability to understand the interaction between software and physical hardware. Experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas is considered an advantage: Real-time systems and deterministic control systems. CAN, CANopen, Modbus, and Ethernet , or other industrial communication protocols. Safety-critical or other embedded systems with high reliability requirements. Bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms. Simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing. Marine propulsion, vessel automation, or other maritime systems. Experience Experience in embedded software development. Experience working with microcontrollers and low-level software. Experience with debugging, testing, and problem-solving in embedded systems. Experience with system testing, simulation, HIL testing, industrial communication protocols, or marine control and propulsion systems is considered an advantage. Ideally, you have a few years of relevant professional experience, but we do not have a specific requirement regarding the number of years. Your technical expertise, potential, and ability to contribute in the role are more important. Skills and Competencies We are looking for someone who is able to: Develop robust and reliable embedded software for systems where correct behaviour, predictability, and performance are critical. Understand what happens throughout the entire chain – from software code to the physical equipment being controlled . Analyse and troubleshoot issues at the intersection of software and hardware. Work throughout the entire development lifecycle – from requirements and design to implementation, testing, and integration. Approach complex technical problems in a structured way and drive them through to resolution. Collaborate across engineering disciplines to develop complete control systems. Communicate technical topics clearly and share knowledge with others in the team. Personal Qualities To succeed in this role, we believe you are: Analytical and solution-oriented , with a genuine interest in understanding how both software and hardware work. Independent and accountable , with the ability to take initiative and drive your work forward. Communicative and collaborative , and comfortable working with people across different disciplines, backgrounds, and areas of expertise. Structured and goal-oriented , particularly when troubleshooting complex technical issues. Curious and technically minded , with a desire to understand the entire chain from code to physical operation. A team player who values knowledge sharing and contributes to the development of the team as a whole. You enjoy having ownership and working independently, while seeing collaboration with other developers and engineering disciplines as a natural part of developing robust and reliable systems. What We Offer At Berg Propulsion, you will have the opportunity to develop software that directly controls real propulsion equipment . You can follow your work from the first lines of code and laboratory testing all the way to a system operating onboard a vessel. You will be part of an experienced development organization where software, electronics, automation, and marine propulsion technology come together to solve complex technical challenges. The role offers a high degree of ownership and the opportunity to influence both technical solutions and future systems. You will work alongside other software developers, including colleagues within Energy Management Systems, giving you the opportunity to work closely with a wide range of technologies and systems across the vessel.
