Software Engineer | Product & Platform

Build technology that helps improve education for every child Use your engineering skills to help improve the opportunities of children. LEERUNIEK helps primary schools and school boards turn complex educational data into insights they can actually use. We combine technology, data science and deep educational expertise to help schools understand how children are developing and where they can make a difference. We're a profitable, mission-driven EdTech company of around 20 people, with a proven product, a growing customer base and plenty left to build. We're looking for a Software Engineer to strengthen our technology team and help take our platform, and the way we build it, to the next level. A small team, serious ownership You'll join a small and experienced product and technology team, combining senior software engineering, backend and full-stack development, data science and product expertise . Several team members have been building LEERUNIEK for five to ten years, bringing deep knowledge of both the technology and the educational domain. The technology team reports directly to our co-founder and CPO/CTO. In a team this size, your contribution is visible. You'll work across the product, take real ownership and have a voice in the technical choices we make. And you won't be starting from zero. There's a proven platform, years of technology and domain knowledge, real customers and real data to build on. A strong foundation, with plenty of room to make it better. What you'll work on Your focus will be the continued development of the LEERUNIEK platform. You will: build and ship new functionality across our stack; take ownership of meaningful parts of the platform, from problem to deployment; deepen shared ownership and knowledge across the codebase together with the team; improve and modernise the platform where it creates real value; develop new capabilities with product, data science and education specialists; contribute directly to technical and architectural decisions; help evolve our engineering practices and make smart use of AI-assisted development. It's a hands-on role combining building what's next with taking ownership of technology that already delivers value every day . Our technology Our platform includes Python, Django, JavaScript, React/Redux, PostgreSQL, Docker/Kubernetes, GitLab and Google Cloud . It's a substantial production platform that continues to evolve. We value readable code, automated testing, collective ownership and pragmatic engineering. We embrace new technology when it helps us build better and ship faster. Who we're looking for You could be a strong medior engineer ready for substantially more ownership, or already operating at senior level. Your title matters less to us than your ability to build good software, learn quickly and contribute to a small team. You'll probably thrive here if you: have several years of professional software engineering experience; are strong in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript or comparable technologies and comfortable across a stack; have built and maintained real production software; enjoy both shipping new functionality and improving what's already there; care about architecture, maintainability and testing without losing sight of users and speed; enjoy working and learning as part of a small team with shared ownership; have actively explored AI-assisted development and are curious to take this further together; want your work to have measurable societal impact. EdTech experience is not required. Curiosity about education and our mission is. Our working language can be English. Dutch is a real plus , as our users are Dutch teachers, school leaders and school boards. What success looks like After six months , you know the platform, own meaningful parts of it and ship independently. You're a trusted member of the team and contribute your own ideas about how our product and engineering can improve. After twelve months , your fingerprints are clearly visible: you've shipped meaningful improvements, strengthened the platform and helped the team develop a faster, smarter way of building. Why LEERUNIEK? You get the influence of a small technology company without having to search for product-market fit: a proven product, real customers and revenue, and deep expertise in technology, data and education. And the problem matters. The Netherlands faces a major challenge in improving educational outcomes and opportunities for children. We believe smarter use of data, analytics and technology can help schools make better decisions and ultimately help more children (and teachers!) thrive. What we offer High autonomy in a profitable, mission-driven technology scale-up A small, experienced team where your contribution genuinely matters Direct collaboration with our CPO/CTO Hybrid working from our Amsterdam office and home 25 days of annual leave A personal education budget Support with the 30% ruling where applicable A multinational, English-speaking team Competitive compensation, appropriate to your experience and level Our process A first conversation about you, us and the role. A technical conversation with people you'll actually work with. A practical session around a real engineering/product challenge. A final conversation and, if we're both excited, an offer. No six-round interview marathon. Interested? Send us your LinkedIn, GitHub, CV or simply tell us what you've built and why this challenge interests you. You can reach us by applying to this vacancy through our website or , or by emailing . If you like the combination of a proven platform, serious ownership and plenty of room to build what comes next , we'd especially like to hear from you.
