Job description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION Under general supervision to perform a variety of operations at the City of Abilene Environmental Recycling Center. These duties include but are not limited to the operation of a front loader collection vehicle, operation of the horizontal grinder, operation of wheeled loaders, and the operation of a commercial roll-off truck. Providing technical supervision while training new solid waste employees on the safe operation of collection routes. SUPERVISION EXERCISED This position exercises no supervision. IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Assists in the collection of the offsite recycle routes operating a roll-off or front loader truck. Performs the daily and weekly preventive maintenance on the farm tractor, and wheel loaders. Maintains and makes minor repairs to the building and grounds; maintains the tree limb service areas to ensure safety and appearance. Operates a tractor with front loading bucket or wheel loader to assist in chipping operations, mulch loading, and grounds maintenance. Performs or assists in the tree limb grinding operations and in the completion of the offsite recycle collection routes. Follow all safety rules and report unsafe working conditions, accidents, and injuries to supervisor OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Operating characteristics and servicing of refuse handling equipment. Work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations. Applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in the operation of heavy equipment. Safe driving principles and practices. Customer Service and Cash Handling. Skill to: Operate and maintain a variety of tools, materials, and equipment used in the recycling program. Safely operate a motor vehicle. Ability to: Learn and understand recycling principles and equipment. Acquire specialized tasks from technical manuals. Read, write and maintain accurate records. Use Basic Computer Programs including Excel and Tyler Enterprise Cashiering. Speak clearly in demonstrating proper procedures and conveying center policies. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally. Experience and Training Guidelines: For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through: Experience: Previous small hand tools, power tools, and manual work experience is required. 18 months of experience operating Commercial Roll Off Vehicles, Wheel Loaders and farm-type tractors is preferred. 1 year Utilizing Business Computers, Email, Point of Sale Terminals experience preferred. Education/Training: A high school diploma or GED is required. License or Certificate: A valid Texas Class B CDL Driver’s License is required.
