Job description
Frontera is reimagining how children with autism and other behavioral health needs get the care they deserve. We bring together world-class clinicians, technologists, and autism specialists to build cutting-edge AI tools that help care teams work smarter and spend more time with the children and families who need them most. Our platform is HIPAA-compliant and designed for the real-world needs of behavioral health teams - from psychologists to ABA therapists. By combining evidence-based care with powerful technology, we’re expanding access to high-quality services for families everywhere. **Our Mission** Frontera exists to close the care gap: every child, no matter where they live, should be able to access effective behavioral healthcare. **The Role** We’re seeking a **Staff+ Software Engineer** to own the backend architecture and scaling of our clinician-facing provider platform. This is a high-ownership IC role where you will define technical direction for core backend systems, not just implement features. You’ll act as a technical leader across multiple engineers and teams, setting patterns for APIs, data modeling, and system design that others build on. **What You'll Do:** - Design, build, and maintain backend services, APIs, and data models that power clinician workflows, reporting, and internal tools. - Own the scalability, reliability, and performance of backend systems and data pipelines in production. - Define and evolve the backend architecture, including API design standards, data modeling patterns, and system interoperability across teams. - Lead technical design for complex, cross-functional initiatives, partnering with product, design, and engineering stakeholders to deliver scalable solutions. - Act as a technical leader and force multiplier by unblocking engineers, driving design reviews, and raising the overall engineering bar across the team. - Partner closely with front-end engineers to ensure seamless integration of backend services into clinician-facing products and internal tools. **Qualifications:** - 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong backend focus. - Experience operating at a Staff+ level, influencing technical direction and architecture across teams without formal authority. - Proven ability to design and scale backend systems, APIs, and data platforms that serve multiple products or business units. - Strong system design experience, including distributed systems, data modeling, and tradeoffs around reliability, scalability, and performance. - Experience building and owning production-grade backend services end-to-end, from database design through APIs and integrations. - Strong proficiency in Python, Node.js, or similar backend technologies, with solid experience in relational and/or NoSQL databases and API design. - Comfort working in ambiguous, fast-moving environments and turning loosely defined problems into scalable technical systems. - Familiarity with B2B SaaS, internal tools, or platform/integration-heavy systems is a plus. - Healthcare or regulated environment experience (e.g., HIPAA/PHI) is a bonus, but not required. **We are open to candidates across multiple levels for this role. Final level and compensation will be determined through the interview process based on experience, technical depth, and scope.** Expected Salary Range in Denver: $190,00 to $220,000 Expected Salary Range in San Francisco: $200,000 to $240,000 **Why Frontera?** - Opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation in pediatric healthcare. - Work on challenging and impactful projects that leverage cutting-edge technologies. - Collaborate with a talented and passionate team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. - Make a real difference in the lives of children and families in rural communities. - Competitive salary and benefits package. **Our Denver Office & Perks** - Dog-friendly office. - Catered lunch from local Denver restaurants five days a week, plus occasional breakfasts and dinners. - Robust snack program and great coffee options (including cappuccino machine and cold brew cans). - Regular team events and low-key socials. - Up to $150/month commuter stipend, discounted nearby parking, and a discounted Colorado Athletic Club membership. - Thoughtfully designed space for focus, collaboration, and connection. - Competitive health benefits, stock options, 401(k), and generous PTO. **Join us in building the future of behavioral healthcare!**
