Staff Software Engineer, Full Stack

**About Gridware** Gridware is a San Francisco-based technology company dedicated to protecting and enhancing the electrical grid. We pioneered a groundbreaking new class of grid management called active grid response (AGR), focused on monitoring the electrical, physical, and environmental aspects of the grid that affect reliability and safety. Gridware’s advanced Active Grid Response platform uses high-precision sensors to detect potential issues early, enabling proactive maintenance and fault mitigation. This comprehensive approach helps improve safety, reduce outages, and ensure the grid operates efficiently. The company is backed by climate-tech and Silicon Valley investors. For more information, please visit [](http://www.gridware.io/). **Role Description:** We’re seeking a Staff Software Engineer who will serve as a technical force multiplier and elevate the entire software engineering organization through architectural excellence, mentorship, and establishing a culture of quality. You’ll design and build the core software systems that power Gridware’s platform, from backend services to the front-end tools our customers and field teams rely on. Few roles span this much of the stack. You’ll work hand in hand with Hardware, Firmware, Data and ML teams, shaping how we monitor the grid, control the fleet and deliver real-time alerts to utilities. This is a high-ownership, high-impact IC leadership role for an engineer who wants their architecture decisions to matter in the physical world, where the systems you build help utilities catch hazards on the grid before they put communities and critical infrastructure at risk. ### Responsibilities - Architect services that stay correct and responsive as our fleet grows to hundreds of thousands of devices, designing for failure modes, graceful degradation and efficient data access. - Build automation into core workflows, from automatic hazard reporting to automated device health analysis and remediations for Field Operations, so our operations scale efficiently. - Own the technical vision for our most critical initiatives and drive the system design decisions that keep the platform reliable and secure. - Foster a culture of ownership and a high engineering bar, with code quality, testing, observability, performance and operational excellence built in from the start. - Mentor engineers at every level, and help grow our next technical leaders. ### Required Skills - 8+ years building and operating large-scale production systems, including scaling them through rapid growth. - Deep experience in designing and scaling distributed data-intensive systems, overcoming reliability and performance challenges. - Proficiency in Python, TypeScript, React, GraphQL, PostgreSQL and Kafka (or similar modern stack). - Experience mentoring engineers and seeing them grow into senior technical roles. - Strong product sense and a passion for building products that combine software, sensors, and the physical world. ### Bonus Skills - Experience developing real-time or event-driven systems (MQTT, WebSockets, gRPC, etc.). - Familiarity with observability tools such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana, or Mimir. - Background working in hardware–software ecosystems or IoT systems. - This describes the ideal candidate; many of us have picked up this expertise along the way. Even if you meet only part of this list, we encourage you to apply!
