At the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies in Ulm, we develop precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies and bring them to prototype maturity together with industry. In addition, we are driving forward the transfer to aeronautics, digitalisation, energy, security and transport. We have an interdisciplinary approach: Theoretical basic research and experimental tests meet engineering implementation. What to expect The department Integration of Micro- and Nanosystems develops technologies for the implementation and miniaturization of quantum systems. Particular attention is paid to the challenging requirements in aerospace applications. Temperature switches are a crucial component in the development of solid-state cryostats for use in space. The aim of the project is to develop an integrated thermal switch to control heat flow. The student will be tasked with conducting a detailed literature review to compare existing approaches to thermal switches, as well as identifying and simulating potential solutions. The aim is to develop and test initial designs and mechanisms for a miniaturised thermal switch with a view to producing the first prototypes.If you’re interested in space technology and the specific requirements for space-based instruments, you’ve come to the right place! Your tasks You will research existing thermoswitch concepts (e.g. gas-gap, magnetocaloric and superconducting switches) and systematically evaluate them in terms of application requirements and feasibility. You will simulate the thermal behaviour of promising concepts numerically (FEM) and derive initial design candidates for a miniaturised thermal switch from this. You will identify critical processes or technological building blocks and develop initial prototypes to find solutions, characterising these experimentally. You will document your results in your Master’s thesis and present them to the research group; if your results are outstanding, there is the possibility of continuing your work as a PhD student. Your profile Student in Master degree programm in the natural sciences (e.g. physics) or engineering (e.g. mechanical engineering, microsystems technology, materials science) or other relevant degree programmes basic knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) Willingness to learn numerical simulation methods (FEM); initial experience with simulation tools (COMSOL, ANSYS, Python) basic knowledge of microtechnology for MEMS systems Interest in conceptual work and the production of prototypes Knowledge of cryogenics or experience with cryogenic measurements (low-temperature physics, cryostats, vacuum systems) and in materials science, particularly thermal and mechanical properties at low temperatures basic programming experience (Python or MATLAB) for data analysis and simulation control The Master’s thesis is to be completed on a voluntary basis. There may be an opportunity to work as a student assistant in a related field as part-time employment.
