Veterinary Assistant I - Equine Medicine and Critical Care Part-time

Job Description Position Summary: This Veterinary Assistant position primarily support for the technicians and patients within the Large Animal hospital, primarily Equine Critical Care, Medicine, and Surgery & Lameness services whose care are being overseen by faculty, residents and interns. If needed this position may float to other large animal sections including Livestock Medicine and Large Animal Radiation. This position requires a basic knowledge of various medical procedures, biosecurity surveillance, and proper equipment usage. This position will assist in the case management on a day-to-day basis by providing support services such as stocking, cleaning and maintaining equipment after use, and providing continuity of patient care with the guidance of the primary technician on shift. This position should have the availability to work holidays, overnights, and weekends as we are a 24/7/365 hospital. In addition to the salary, this position is eligible for differential pay. Salary Differentials: We offer hourly differentials for certain days/times as an incentive to team members should your shift fall during these days/times. These differentials apply when half or more of the scheduled hours fall between that shift. + 20 % of your hourly rate for hours worked 4 pm on Friday – 6 am on Monday + 14 % of your hourly rate for hours worked 11 pm – 6 am Monday-Thursday + 7.5 % of your hourly rate for hours worked 4 pm-11 pm Monday-Thursday Essential Duties Assists in providing efficient, optimal patient care including: triage, assessment, treatments, monitoring, and restraint. Collaborates with interns, residents, faculty, and technicians to ensure appropriate treatment plans. This is done by evaluating patient status, response to therapy, collecting diagnostic samples, and setting up for procedures Provides clinical and technical assistance such as: fluid and drug administration, IV sampling, blood gas collection, operation and troubleshooting of all specialty-related equipment, set up and breakdown of procedures, cleaning and stocking clinical areas Assist in out-patient appointments such as neuro exams, endoscopy procedures, ultrasound exams, respiratory exams, ophthalmology exams. Responsible for biosecurity awareness by leading by example and educating clients within the Equine barn. Learn the process to appropriately clean and store equipment between uses to protect biosecurity of equipment. Participate in the annual process of deep cleaning of the equine hospital. Uphold information presented to DVM and FRCC students within orientation that includes basic knowledge of the working function of the main hospital and equine isolation unit. Supervision: No formal supervisory duties Conditions of Employment: Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires) Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare Minimum Education: HS Diploma or GED Minimum Experience: One year of experience caring for horses and providing equine handling experience OR a combination of related education and/or experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position equal to one (1) year. Preferred Qualifications: One year (1) experience working in an equine hospital Demonstrate experience providing customer service in a fast paced environment. A strong desire to learn and advance medical and technical knowledge base. Ability to be compassionate and empathetic to clients in emotional situations. Demonstrate experience working with a team.
